Coming out of the severe economic recession of 2009, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion had deep concerns about the impacts on business and unemployment in the city.    Recognizing that employment cannot be addressed by just government alone, on February 9, 2010, Mayor McCallion along with key community partners, brought together over 300 leaders representing business, education, not-for-profit groups, labour organizations and government for a half-day session to discuss and identify strategies and partnerships to increase employment in Mississauga.

On May 17, 2010, Mayor Hazel McCallion and the Mississauga Job Summit Task Force launched the Mayor’s Summer Job Challenge – a call to action to employers to hire two more students for summer positions than they did the previous year.  It is expected that the summer of 2010 will be a very difficult time for students to gain employment, with many potential negative impacts, including the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and financial impacts on savings for future education.

The Job Creation Task Force led by the Mississauga Summit and Mississauga Board of Trade was established as an outcome of the Mississauga Works – Mayor’s Job Summit to develop short, medium and long-term strategies to improve employment in Mississauga.   The Task Force is comprised of individuals and representatives of leading stakeholder organizations including business, education, not-for-profit groups, and government.  The Taskforce is Co-Chaired by Brian Crombie, Co-Chair, Mississauga Summit and Sheldon Leiba, President & CEO, Mississauga Board of Trade.
